Legislation Passed Amidst Shutdown

On February 4, 2026, President Trump signed a crucial piece of legislation aimed at ending the recent government shutdown that began on Saturday. The shutdown occurred after Congress failed to reach an agreement to fund federal government operations.

The newly enacted law provides funding for various departments within the U.S. administration. However, it notably separates the budget for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which is only funded until February 13.

Congressional Voting Dynamics

The Senate had previously approved the spending plan on Friday evening with a bipartisan vote of 71 to 29. Despite this progress, the House of Representatives was on recess, delaying the final approval.

Ultimately, the House passed the legislation on Tuesday by a narrow margin, with a vote tally of 217 in favor and 214 against, successfully concluding the shutdown.
