US PCE Inflation Rises to 2.9% in December

PCE Inflation Overview

The Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index recorded an annual increase of 2.9% in December, up from 2.8% in November. This rise was reported by the Commerce Department on Friday.

Monthly Growth Exceeds Expectations

On a monthly basis, the PCE index rose by 0.4%, again surpassing economists' predictions of a 0.3% increase. This follows a more modest rise of 0.2% in November.

Core PCE Inflation Insights

The core PCE index, which excludes the more volatile categories of energy and food, showed a year-over-year increase of 3.0% in December. This figure was higher than the anticipated 2.9% and marked an increase from 2.8% in November.
