Donald Trump announced in September that imports of heavy trucks would be subject to new tariffs for national security reasons. He stated that these tariffs aim to protect American manufacturers from "unfair foreign competition."
The tariffs are expected to benefit companies such as Peterbilt and Kenworth (subsidiaries of Paccar), as well as Freightliner, owned by Daimler Truck. The affected vehicles include delivery trucks, dump trucks, utility trucks, public transport buses, shuttles, school buses, as well as heavy-duty trucks with trailers, semi-trailers, and commercial heavy vehicles.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce had previously urged the Department of Commerce not to impose new tariffs on trucks, highlighting that the top five sources of imports are Mexico, Canada, Japan, Germany, and Finland—countries that are close allies or partners of the U.S. and do not pose a national security threat.
These measures could impact Stellantis, which produces utility vehicles under the Ram Trucks brand and commercial vans in Mexico. The company has reportedly lobbied the White House to avoid high tariffs on its models manufactured abroad.
