Announcement Timeline Accelerated

During a press interaction in Washington on Thursday evening, President Trump confirmed that he would disclose his decision regarding the next Federal Reserve Chair on Friday morning. This announcement comes during a preview screening of a documentary about his wife, Melania Trump.

The 79-year-old billionaire emphasized that he has selected 'someone very good' for the position, indicating a shift in his previously stated timeline. Earlier that day, he had suggested that the announcement would take place the following week.

Concerns Over Interest Rates

In a cabinet meeting, Trump reiterated his concerns about current interest rates, describing them as 'too high, intolerably high.' He expressed confidence that his choice would effectively address these issues.

He mentioned that he would make the announcement alongside key figures, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

Candidates Under Consideration

For weeks, Trump has indicated that his decision is finalized and imminent. Current Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's term is set to expire in May. Last month, Trump hinted at the possibility of appointing his economic advisor, Kevin Hassett, but later appeared to reconsider, citing the need for Hassett's expertise in promoting his policies on television.

In addition to Hassett, the final candidates reportedly include former and current Federal Reserve governors Kevin Warsh and Christopher Waller, as well as Rick Rieder, the Chief Investment Officer at BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager.

Federal Reserve's Recent Decisions

On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve opted to maintain its current interest rates after implementing three consecutive cuts at the end of 2025. During his customary press conference, Jerome Powell expressed his belief that the institution would retain its independence, stating, 'I sincerely hope that does not happen.'
