Trump Increases Tariffs on India to 50%
The U.S. executive has signed a decree formalizing an increase in tariffs on India, which will take effect in three weeks. This new 25% increase is in addition to a reciprocal 25% tariff announced last week by the United States against India, set to begin on Thursday. Earlier this week, the White House threatened to raise tariffs on India due to its purchases of Russian oil, arguing that these purchases contribute to financing the war in Ukraine. These measures come as the U.S. President seeks to persuade Russia to end the conflict in Ukraine, a campaign promise he is striving to fulfill. In response to the White House's tariff threats, India stated that its purchases of Russian oil are a "necessity" for maintaining cost stability. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs emphasized, "Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security."
