Stock Market: Caution in Europe After Trump-Putin Summit
European stock markets are anticipated to open on a cautious note on Monday following the highly anticipated summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which did not yield any ceasefire agreement, according to Reuters. Futures indicate a decline of 0.05% for the CAC 40 in Paris, a nearly stable DAX in Frankfurt, a rise of 0.16% for the FTSE in London, and a gain of 0.09% for the Stoxx 600. During a brief press conference on Friday evening in Alaska (Saturday morning Paris time), Trump and Putin made no concrete announcements regarding the conflict in Ukraine. However, President Trump aligned himself with President Putin's stance of seeking a comprehensive peace agreement rather than an initial ceasefire, as requested by Kyiv. On Monday, Donald Trump will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders, including Emmanuel Macron, to discuss a peace agreement. "Risky assets may initially welcome the prospect of 'peace,' but ongoing skepticism about its sustainability will keep volatility at a high level," notes John Plassard, a strategist at Cité Gestion.
