Lagarde's Insights on U.S. Tariffs

In a recent interview on RTL radio, Christine Lagarde shared her perspective on the potential effects of U.S. tariffs, predicting only a modest inflationary impact. She noted that Germany would likely feel the brunt of these tariffs more than France.

Lagarde emphasized that European nations would be significantly stronger if they eliminated non-tariff trade barriers within the European Union. She stated, 'With inflation currently under control at 1.9%, the impact of tariffs will be minimal.'

Concerns Over Economic Uncertainty

However, Lagarde expressed serious concerns regarding the heightened level of uncertainty stemming from constant policy shifts. 'What is much more serious, and I choose my words carefully, is the degree of uncertainty created by these ongoing reversals,' she remarked.

Trump's Recent Tariff Threats

The discussion comes in the wake of President Trump's recent threats to impose tariffs on countries opposing his Greenland acquisition plan. On Monday, he escalated tensions by announcing a staggering 200% tax on French wines and champagnes unless President Emmanuel Macron joined his 'Council of Peace,' an initiative aimed at resolving international conflicts.
