Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire agreement on Thursday in Gaza, along with a plan for the release of hostages, following intense pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump. This marks a significant step towards ending two years of destructive warfare in the Palestinian territory.
The agreement is set to be signed on Thursday in Egypt after four days of indirect negotiations in the resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh, which involved several international actors, including the United States. The exact time for the ceasefire's implementation will be announced on the same day, and the release of living hostages will occur "based on the conditions on the ground" in Gaza, according to a Hamas source speaking to AFP.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described it as "a great day for Israel" and is expected to convene his cabinet to "ratify the agreement and bring back all our precious hostages." However, his far-right ministers have previously refused to halt the offensive in Gaza until Hamas is destroyed.
It is important to note that the United Nations has declared a state of famine in parts of Gaza, and its investigators have stated that Israel is committing acts of genocide in the region.
