Collective Pride in Hosting a World-Class Event
The Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, emphasized the collective pride of Morocco in successfully hosting a major international competition. He highlighted that the nation has demonstrated its capability to organize a world-class event, a feat that has been in the making for over 25 years under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.
Significant Economic Indicators
From an economic perspective, preliminary indicators are promising. Mezzour stated that CAN 2025 is among the most profitable tournaments ever organized, benefiting both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the host country. Revenues and investments associated with the tournament have reportedly increased by a factor of 1.8, a remarkable achievement for a continental sporting event.
This surge in economic activity has contributed to an acceleration in national growth, with estimates suggesting a year-end growth rate exceeding 4.5%. The minister also noted the creation of approximately 100,000 direct and indirect jobs, alongside a significant rise in consumer spending.
Infrastructure Development: A Decade's Progress in Two Years
Beyond immediate economic benefits, CAN 2025 has acted as a catalyst for structural investments. In just 24 months, Morocco has reportedly made up for nearly a decade of infrastructure development. The projects extended well beyond stadiums, encompassing upgrades to roads, airports, rail networks, urban transport, and public facilities.
Over 3,000 Moroccan industrial companies participated in these initiatives, particularly in construction and related sectors. According to the minister, these developments will have lasting impacts on citizens' daily lives, particularly in terms of mobility, healthcare access, and employment opportunities.
Boost to the Commercial Sector
The commercial sector has also reaped benefits from the event, with Mezzour reporting an estimated increase in consumer spending between 25% and 30%. While final figures are still being consolidated, initial indicators are deemed 'extremely encouraging.'
A Prelude to the 2030 World Cup
CAN 2025 serves as a precursor to the 2030 World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal. The minister noted that nearly 80% of the necessary sports investments have already been made and, crucially, have been recouped during CAN 2025. The success of the organization has validated Morocco's logistical, security, and accommodation capabilities.
Mezzour expressed confidence in Morocco's readiness for the 2030 event, asserting that the nation now carries this ambition not only for itself but for the entire African continent.
Addressing Social Concerns
When questioned about the social movements that preceded the tournament, particularly regarding health and education issues, the minister acknowledged that these concerns have been heard. He recognized the strong expectations of Moroccan youth and confirmed that reforms are underway in a climate described as unified and action-oriented.
A Message to the National Team
In conclusion, Ryad Mezzour conveyed a strong message of support to the national team, praising the players as true ambassadors of the country. For the government, the significance of CAN 2025 extends beyond sports results; it has reaffirmed the commitment to leveraging sports as a key driver of economic development and international projection.
