A New Methodology for Tourism Statistics
The Ministry of Tourism, Handicrafts, and Social and Solidarity Economy, along with the National Confederation of Tourism and the Tourism Observatory, presented a new model for estimating occupancy indicators in classified tourist accommodations today in Rabat. The event was co-chaired by Fatim-Zahra Ammor, Minister of Tourism, and Hamid Bentahar, President of the National Confederation of Tourism. This initiative represents a significant step in modernizing the national tourism information system and will provide essential data to guide decisions for industry professionals and inform investment choices for both national and international investors. Aligned with best practices adopted by leading tourist destinations, the new model is based on a representative sample that considers accommodation types, destinations, and seasonality. The results of this model are corroborated by other data sources from the field, allowing for a more comprehensive and accurate measurement of tourism activity. This internationally favored approach offers an expanded view of the occupancy of Classified Tourist Accommodation Establishments (EHTC) and significantly improves the quality of indicators. On this occasion, the Minister stated, “The step we are taking today is not merely a technical exercise; it is a strategic act that fully aligns with the implementation of the 2023-2026 roadmap, which places governance at the heart of the sector's priorities. This new model, along with the new website of the Tourism Observatory, paves the way for quality analyses and greatly expands the scope of action for both public and private stakeholders.”
